Portlandia

The following review is on Season 1 of Portlandia. I may make references to Season 2 because I am currently in the middle of Season 2.

This comedy sketch show pokes fun at the second nerdiest city in the country -- Portland, Oregon. (For those of you who don't believe me: http://www.king5.com/news/cities/seattle/Seattle-Portland-rank-high-in-nerdiness--202393471.html.) Composed entirely of skits, this IFC show lacks a true plot. I like to describe it as Saturday Night Live without the "live" part. It stars Fred Armisen (from SNL) and Carrie Brownstein, both of whom also co-created, co-produce, and co-write it. This show is pretty much a cult; not everybody has heard of it, but those who watch it are obsessive: including me. I began watching it at the beginning of the week, if my memory serves me, and I cannot get enough. I even had "KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD" (referencing a real sign in Portland that is featured in the theme song) and "Women and Women First NORTH-EAST PORTLAND" (referencing the location of what is probably my favorite recurring skit) engraved into the front and back of a green dog tag yesterday. The show is hilarious, even a bit disturbing at times. There is at least one comedic genius or other famous guest star in every episode: Andy Samberg (SNL), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Safety Not Guaranteed), and Gus Van Sant (director of such films as Elephant, Milk, and Promised Land), to name a few. This show is completely ridiculous, but it's worth a try! Watching the pilot isn't necessary, so I recommend watching S1E4, S1E5, or S2E1. Highlights: The pilot has the song "Dream of the 90's," S1E2 has the skit "Put a Bird on It," S1E5 has Gus in it, S2E1 has the skit "We Can Pickle That!" Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix, and select skits can be watched on YouTube. Season 3 finished a little while ago, and Season 4 will air next January.
