Milk

This Gus Van Sant-directed drama is about the struggle for Harvey Milk, an openly gay man living in San Francisco, to become a government official. He would later be the first openly-gay elected official in the United States. Throughout the film, his controversial nature feeds the possibility of being murdered. Van Sant does a good job depicting the troubling times for the gays in the '70s. Sean Penn, who plays Milk, does a fantastic job playing the inspirational politician. This won him the well-deserved Academy Award for Best Lead Actor. This film also won Best Original Screenplay, which is not surprising since it is a biographical piece. It is filled with memorable lines which the film circles back to at appropriate times, to say the least. Harris Savides, a regular cinematographer for Gus, did a nice job setting the mood with his style. Catch this movie On Demand.
