This is a charming indie about three magazine writers who go to write an article about a guy who put out an ad asking for a partner to go back in time. No, you are not about to watch some sci-fi flick. It is a quirky rom-com about the connections people share with the past. Jeff, the boss of the two interns he takes to work on the article, seeks out an old flame from high school. Arnau, one of the two interns, is a naive young man who has yet to experience adult life. Darius, the other intern, takes comfort in Kenneth, the guy who claims to have built a time machine. They both have personal reasons for wanting to go back in time, and Darius is the only one of the three magazine employees who does not assume Kenneth is crazy from the start. With only a $750,000 budget, or any budget really, I think the filmmakers of this delight did a good job. Adding a twist to the typical rom-com, similar to that of
Silver Linings Playbook, this movie had some surprises in it. This was Derek Connolly's first screenplay, for which he is deservingly nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Unfortunately, this movie did not make it to all theaters when it came out, but it is a nice find at Redbox now. I hope that Colin Trevorrow, the director, will make more films with this spirit.
