Mad Men

This focus of the following review is on the pilot of Mad Men.

This AMC drama is about an advertising agency in the early 1960s. We get to see the inspiration for the lively ads of the time while soaking in '60s culture. I only just watched the pilot yesterday and Episode 2 today, but already I can tell you that this show delivers. The costume design, art direction, and cinematography is impressive, as it all should be in period pieces. It is stylized like the '60s, even in the sound design. Although it is a drama, it's a light-hearted one, often poking fun at aspects of life that seem absurd now. For instance, smoking cigarettes was a huge trend back in the day, so they even show a doctor smoking on the job. Plus the "mad men" of the advertising company drink and smoke all day every day. I already love the show and look forward to seeing the rest. It'll get me through my Breaking Bad withdrawal. ;) Seasons 1 through 5 are available on Netflix.
