Little White Lies

Today I had the pleasure of watching this French film, courtesy of the DVD I bought yesterday. It was not near me when it was in theaters, so I was delighted to happen upon it at Target. I originally found it on IMDb after looking at Marion Cotillard's and Jean Dujardin's pages. When I discovered that they were going to be in a movie together I was ecstatic. Anyway, this artsy dramedy is about a group of friends that goes on its yearly vacation without one of the friends, Ludo, because he is being treated in the hospital following a horrible motorcycle collision. On this vacation we see the struggle of life as the friends keep each other's distance and deal with certain tensions, all while coping with the fact that their friend is in critical condition at the hospital. Without spoiling the surprise of the different conflicts, I will say that this film shows life at its bottom layer, uncovered for all to witness. Love, heartbreak, and change are the focal points, which are themes that I think are best expressed in French. Marion Cotillard's profound talent is on display, and the other actors give great, believable, true performances as well. France's loving culture really takes you off of your sofa and into Europe, making you feel like you are one of the vacationing friends. Even the subtly bright cinematography keeps this movie looking like real life, never taking you out of the moment. I loved this piece of art with every part of my being and soul, and I strongly recommend everyone here to watch it.
