DGA Awards

The annual DGA Awards ceremony was yesterday evening, and there weren't really any surprises. Ben Affleck, the director of Argo who has won just about every award there is, won once again. He is considered the underdog mainly because he was not nominated for the Best Director Oscar. This seems to have worked in his favor. In the other major category, Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series, Rian Johnson won for the Breaking Bad episode entitled "Fifty-One." That was a great episode -- as every episode of Breaking Bad has been -- and Johnson deserved this award for it. Plus, we beat TWO directors of Homeland! If his name does not sound familiar to you, his latest directorial effort is Looper, the major time travel flick of 2012. (See also Safety Not Guaranteed.) Lena Dunham won the award for a Comedy Series for the critically-acclaimed HBO series pilot of Girls. I think of all the nominees -- though I love The Big Bang Theory, and Bryan Cranston was nominated for directing an episode of Modern Family -- she had the hardest job to do, especially being an actor in it as well. No, she was not the only actor-director nominated, but I think it must be challenging to direct a show like Girls, even with HBO's support. As for the Musical Variety category, the Tony Awards telecast was very memorable this year. Overall, the DGA Awards were accurate and pleasing this year. Your thoughts?
