Good Will Hunting

This was created yesterday, but I accidentally saved it to draft rather than publishing it:

This Gus Van Sant-directed drama is about an underachieving genius (Will) whose mathematical talent is discovered while working as a janitor at MIT. We later find out that he landed this job through his parole officer. He is often in sticky situations of violence, which is probably a result of his rough childhood. Starring Matt Damon as the genius and Robin Williams as his psychologist (as required to get him out of jail time, in addition to helping a professor at MIT work out math problems), this movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards and even won two (Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also acts in the movie). Sean, the psychologist, helps Will figure out what he really wants in life. This leads to an inspirational ending with some tearful lines that come full circle. Nonetheless, some parts of the dialogue were really corny in my opinion. For example, when Will goes up to the window to confront the jerk from the bar one final time, he has a big setup ("Do you like apples?") as if he is about to say the greatest line of the movie, but he ends up saying, "Well, I got her number. How do you like them apples?" Then his friends are laughing and making a big deal out of it, but I really didn't think it was all that great. Some parts of the movie were really heartfelt and emotional, but sometimes I wasn't feeling it when I knew I was probably supposed to be dropping a tear or two. Like at the park when Sean has a big speech to Will. Sean wasn't crying, when the words he was saying would suggest otherwise, and I understand that he didn't want to make a scene, but I still think he would have gotten more choked up. Anyway, this movie was good in the fundamentals, but feel short of my expectations. I did appreciate it more when I started watching it with the commentary of Van Sant, Damon, and Affleck. It was also interesting to see Affleck in his younger days, and I thought he did a good job. Good Will Hunting is a good movie worth watching, just don't expect anything over the top.
