Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is a movie that all human beings should watch sometime in their lifetime. It is the tale of Charlotte, Bob, and friendship. Charlotte is a young wife/recent college grad, who is lonely in her hotel room while her husband is working as a photographer. Bob Harris is a movie star in town to shoot a commercial, as he is losing popularity as a film actor and gaining popularity as a tool for propaganda. They both are staying at the same hotel in Tokyo, seeing each other drowning their sorrows at the bar quite often. Charlotte tries to discover what she wants to do with the rest of her life while struggling with marriage; Bob enjoys being away from his wife while reminiscing about the honeymoon stage in their relationship. Charlotte and Bob quickly become close friends and help each other psychologically deal with their problems. Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray are perfect as these deep characters, bringing running tears to my eyes for the first time in a while. Coppola evokes emotions that you may not have even known existed, at least for me. I admire her brilliance in making good stories great ones. The ending is one of my favorites. It is so real and perfect and gut-wrenching that I shall say no more and let you devour this great story for yourself. This too is on Netflix.
