Blue Valentine

This Derek Cianfrance-directed film shows the dwindling love of a married couple, played by Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The story switches back and forth between the early days when they first met (including a ballad performed by Gosling himself) and later on when they are raising a little girl and fighting all the time. Both Gosling and Williams really transform for the harder times, Williams looking weary and busy, with Gosling loud-mouthed and reckless. In between shooting the happier days and the sad ones, the two actors got a month to live with each other, creating memories of holidays and birthdays, living on a fixed income, etc. This really helped create the genuine feel in the movie. As a young single girl, I know practically nothing about marriage, besides my own observations. However, I still felt really connected with the story and was not bored at all. Cianfrance has done a great job with this piece, and I liked that every moment was not packed with meaningless dialogue. His directing style of pulling actors aside to coach them without the other actors knowing what he told them creates real moments in the film that are very special (i.e. Gosling climbing the fence on the bridge). Kudos!

Here is an interesting interview with Ryan and Michelle with more information about how it was shot: http://youtu.be/oi-ZuBpyNxc
