I shall start off with the disappointments of the year: Moonrise Kingdom. It bothers me that, even though ten pictures can be nominated, that last spot was not filled by this wonderful indie. So yes, it deserved a Best Picture nom and yes, Wes Anderson should have gotten a Best Director nod, but what really bothers me is the fact that it didn't even get nominated for Best Cinematography. When I saw it months ago I just knew that it deserved Best Cinematography. The shots were set up in very artistic and brilliant ways, and it's not even nominated? I even think it deserves nominations for Production Design and Costume Design, which both helped enhance the cinematography. The only thing Moonrise Kingdom got nominated for was Best Original Screenplay. What?! Of all things, it gets nominated for that? Come on! The script may have been good, but that was not particularly what I got from the experience.
At least Robert Richardson got nominated for his cinematography work on Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. Speaking of which, why wasn't Tarantino nominated for Directing? Why wasn't Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty? That category was full of surprises in itself, aside from Spielberg, who seems to be guaranteed a spot anytime he does anything. Sorry Lincoln fans, but I don't get all the fuss behind that movie. It was obviously Oscar bait from the start, of course, but I don't think it should be leading the pack with a whopping twelve nominations.
Back to Tarantino: I can't complain too much about Django Unchained's nominations. Of course it was put up for Best Picture, as it should, but what Quentin really cares about is his script, so I'm sure he's happy about that nomination. I am disappointed, however, that more of the actors weren't nominated. Sure, Christoph Waltz is up for Actor in a Supporting Role, and that's good, but I thought Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio were great too.
That's all I have to say for today, but keep checking back and subscribe to the email updates for more Oscar buzz and film reviews. Tell me your thoughts in the comments section below! Don't be shy! These next six weeks or so will go by fast as they always do, so plan accordingly to see as many of the honored films as you can! Remember: even though we all know that the Academy doesn't always get it right, these films are still nominated for a reason!
