Road to the Oscars: Actor in a Leading Role

Bradley Cooper -- Cooper was acceptable in the comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook; however, I didn't find him to be consistently believable. I don't think his role was very difficult to play, and so I really don't understand why he is getting so much critical acclaim. I did enjoy the movie, but I don't think he was extraordinary.

Daniel Day-Lewis -- As President Abraham Lincoln, Day-Lewis was superb. Surely, this was in part due to the incredible hair and makeup team, but he deserves a lot of credit, too. He eloquence matched what most of us picture Lincoln sounding like, and the weary bliss of his mannerisms was flawless.

Hugh Jackman -- As Jean Valjean, an escaped prisoner in Les Misérables, Jackman did a fine job. I admire that he prepared diligently for this role by getting singing lessons and everything. He made his character very likable, and by the end you really feel for Valjean.

Joaquin Phoenix -- In the clips of Phoenix's performance that I have seen, he does a great job showing how emotionally disturbed he is after WWII.

Denzel Washington -- This is a performance that I cannot honestly judge. I have seen clips, but not enough to really have a strong opinion on his job playing an intoxicated pilot. He seems to have really gotten into his role, and, I was told that he was good, but I have yet to see for myself. Tell me what you think if you saw it.

Based on the opinions I have collected, I think Daniel Day-Lewis should win the Oscar. He has been the favorite for quite some time now, but for good reason.

  1. When I judge these things, I ask if someone could have stepped in to play a particular role. I don't think anyone could have pulled off Joaquin's role in The Master. You might be able to say the same thing about Day-Lewis.
