Although I often poke fun at the Golden Globes since it is more of a party than an awards show, unlike the Oscars, I have also learned that it is an important event in that it sets the tone for the Academy Awards. Now, it is true that the winners may be different (like the Social Network vs. King's Speech battle two years back in 2011), as they will be in the Best Director category (since Ben Affleck is not even nominated at the Oscars). I am hoping for some to stay the same. For example, assuming that you watched the gala last night or on DVR or by the photo to the left or whatever, you should be aware that Jessica Chastain won Best Actress in a Lead Role for her work in
Zero Dark Thirty (yay!). I especially want to see Quentin Tarantino win Best Original Screenplay. I don't know about you, but I was surprised when he said that it was a surprise that he won since he takes enormous pride in his writing. Nonetheless, I hope he is surprised again.
Argo was a good movie, but it would be nice to see another movie win Best Picture after seeing it win both the Critics' Choice Movie Award and now the Golden Globe. For instance,
Django Unchained or, the more likely,
Zero Dark Thirty. However, it would be pretty awesome to see Affleck win that since he isn't even nominated for Best Director. Hopefully Anne Hathaway will win Best Supporting Actress (Les Misérables) again because she really deserves it, especially for singing her emotional song with a camera all up in her face the whole time. In Jennifer Lawrence's category, Lawrence deserved the Golden Globe, but since she is up against Chastain for the Oscar, no thanks. I saw
Beasts of the Southern Wild last night before the awards, and I agree with the Academy that Quvenzhané Wallis gave a notable performance, but I really hope she doesn't beat Chastain. If Wallis is still a good actress when she grows up, then maybe I wouldn't mind her winning down the road as long as she is old enough to conceive what a big deal it is to win an Oscar. As a Tim Burton fan and a
Frankenweenie diehard, I would really love to see it beat out
Brave, Pixar's newest brew for the critics. That could really go either way since it is really a two-man race. Daniel Day-Lewis won, as expected... oh and I thought Adele's speech was funny. Not related to the Oscars, but I was disappointed that
Homeland took away the two awards that
Breaking Bad was nominated for, but that's just because I love that show. :) Oh, and how 'bout that Jodie Foster speech? Thoughts?
